We want to provide you with free chapter from Bill Hybels' soon-to-be-released book The Power of a Whisper. Take some time to read the chapter as you prepare for your experience at the Summit and journal your impressions (or post them on facebook).
Going Deeper
- Throughout this chapter, Bill Hybels described specific instances throughout his life where he clearly heard the voice of God leaving direct and specific impressions in his spirit. Take a few minutes to reflect on your own life and make an inventory of your own. Describe some of the "whispers" that you have heard from God over your life and what happened as a result.
- Read through the biblical account of God's whispers to the boy Samuel in 1 Samuel. Consider memorizing Miss Van Solen's poem for yourself and praying it every day over the next week, writing down any impressions you might have from God.
An open ear, O Lord,
Alive and quick to hear
Each whisper of Thy Word;
Like him to answer to Thy call
And to obey Thee first of all.

I remember all the years as a child and early teen not knowing God was real. I'd been taught from vacation Bible school that He and Jesus were real but found no evidence of their existence in my home. After years of searching for the truth God spoke to me during a Christmas Eve service at Willow. He showed me Jesus was real through the song Silent Night. Three months later during a "Fear Of" series I heard the salvation message Bill taught. It rocked my world. I came home, got on my knees and gave my life (broken as it was) to Christ. I will always remember that small still voice calling me to Him. At baptism, Bill whispered this to me: "Walk with the Lord, Amy." Through tears streaming down my cheeks I nodded and knew my heart, mind and soul were finally safe.
ReplyDeleteI've had the privilege to read, and re-read, "The Power of a Whisper" in the final manuscript copy. Thank you, Bill, for sharing these very honest and insightful moments from your life. It's been an encouragement in my own life to know that sometimes when I don't think God is speaking to me, it's often because I'm "subjectively missing" His whisper and consequently His leading in an important area of obedience.

ReplyDeleteSteve, I know you're not alone in 'subjectively missing' God's whispers. I wonder how many of us miss God's whispers because we're busy, consumed with life, or just don't take the time to actually listen.

I wept as I read this because it resonates in me: I want to hear the voice of God for myself and my husband, and I want my children to hear it as well.
